Director's Notes

Choices. We all have choices to make, directions to take. Making decisions, however, is never all black and white as our opening suggests. An attempt to persuade us into making a decision using magic and miracles has no foundation or grounding, so our choices have no substance, and our decisions become hollow. We seem to float unsatisfyingly from one activity to another, not unlike our ensemble as they dance the opening number with their blank faces floating in mid-air. Our castle walls contain no furniture-filled rooms. The walls are a facade, a mirage, a pretense to help sell the illusion of reality. It is a way of entrapping our next victim; our next sacrifice.

We present a simple story tonight about a band of players performing the "true life story of Pippin" as they roam the countryside. It's a coming-of-age story for Pippin as he aflempts to find complete, ultimate fulfillment in his common, ordinary life. Pippin dives into everything with the innocence of a young boy, but comes up gasping for more, still empty inside as he searches for something yet unknown. The players encourage Pippin as he jumps into every new activity on his quest for fulfillment. They become invested in his search. But what is it they want? What is it they are looking for? Sit back, relax for an hour or two, and join us as we take this journey together.

I would like to dedicate my journey with this production to my young friend Jeremy. He has demonstrated through his own coming-of-age story full of ups and downs, that with a good foundation and support from family and friends, he has been able to make the right choices as he grows into becoming a fine young man. I am so proud of you Jeremy.
